Three Minute Thesis Entry – Ramon Cases

Transcript

This presentation exposes the work done with my doctoral thesis on the effects of osteopathic treatment on associated neurocognitive disorders, and health-related quality of life in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder FASD, effective in June 2023 in the University of Barcelona, Spain, where you perceive an excellent co-learning rate. The main objective of this exposition is to find support and corroboration to expand our work through a multicentre three phase study.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first academic study on paper, to assess the impact of osteopathy on children and adolescents with FASD. It focuses on evaluating the effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment on neurocognitive symptoms and health-related quality of life. The introduction highlights the severe consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure, emphasising its impact on physical, mental, cognitive and behavioural development, with FASD being a prevalent teratological disorder. The presence of factors like early life stress in high-risk populations, cohorts and FASD effects, necessitating early and individualising integrations to improve health-related quality of life and neuro-psychological symptoms.

The study’s hypothesis and objectives involves assessing the impact of intervention to confirm the applicability and effectiveness of an osteopathic manipulative treatment. The search is divided into two phases. The first phase with validated intervention, examined theory to see thirty-two children with FASD, with attention deficit, age three to six and found statistical significant intergroup differences after an osteopathic manipulative treatment. In attention, iconic memory and spatial structuration; not for visual perception. Second phase involved twelve participants, twelve children and adolescents internationally adopted aged eight to sixteen years old with FASD, revealing significant improvements in health-related quality of life post the six months, post the osteopathic intervention. Especially in areas of significant difficulty such as well-being, self-esteem, learning capacity and social acceptance. Osteopathic intervention may have an effect on overall homeostasis and anti-inflammatory action and an effect the sensory system. Conclusions indicate that osteopathy can be a valuable, safe and effective treatment for FASD, leading to improvements in neurocognitive functions and health-related quality of life. The study also highlighted its cost effectiveness and the need for further research with large sample sizes and extended follow-up periods with the necessary support and collaboration looks fun to work through a multi centric, third phase study.
