Guidelines for Assessment and Diagnosis of FASD

The Australian Guidelines for Assessment and Diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)

On 13th May 2025, Australia released the Australian Guidelines for Assessment and Diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), marking a significant advancement in the clinical approach to FASD across the lifespan.

These updated Guidelines build upon the foundational work of the Australian Guide to the Diagnosis of FASD originally published in May 2016 and updated in February 2020.

The 2025 Guidelines reflect the latest research and clinical insights and are designed to support Australian health professionals in the accurate assessment and Diagnosis of FASD.

Importantly, the Guidelines have been approved by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), ensuring they meet the highest standards of evidence-based practice. This work was made possible through funding from the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care.

The Guidelines are accompanied by a suite of practical tools, templates and resources to assist clinicians and service providers, and across other allied health and general practice.
