SUPPORTING ADULTS WITH FASD

As everyone knows, children living with FASD grow into adults. What many people in the wider community do not know is that FASD continues to be present into adulthood and throughout a person’s lifetime. As with children, adults living with FASD benefit from recognition of the disability and individualised support. Increasingly, as awareness of FASD grows, the population of adults who are living with suspected FASD will grow. Unfortunately, there are almost no adult diagnostic services in Australia and even less FASD-informed support services. Hopefully this will improve as awareness increases.

In the meantime, NOFASD Australia has some specific FASD resources for adults who have FASD and for the individuals and organisations who support them. NOFASD Australia stays current with the support and diagnostic services which are available, and the NOFASD Helpline can answer questions and provide location specific information.

NOFASD Australia is working to ensure that the NDIS recognises FASD as a disability. It is essential that diagnostic and support services become widely available for the individuals and families who need them. For information on applying for the NDIS click here.
